First marijuana consumption lounge opens in New Mexico

Sol Cannabis, the first adult-use marijuana consumption lounge in the state of New Mexico opened its doors in Las Cruces, near the El Paso, Texas border.

“This is groundbreaking not only for us but also for the state of New Mexico. We’re putting cannabis on the map,” Sol Cannabis co-founder Kwame Ponshock told El Paso television station KFOX.

According to MJBizDaily, Sol Cannabis’ recreational marijuana store and consumption area “is well-positioned to take advantage of the expected influx of buyers crossing the border from Texas, which has only a limited medical marijuana industry.”

On the other hand, Ponshock told XFOX that he wanted to create a safe space for marijuana consumers.

“I wanted to have a haven for people like me and being able to consume cannabis in a cannabis-friendly area with other cannabis users gives us a way to adapt and be more public,” Ponshock said.

Under New Mexico’s legalization law, public use of the substance can receive a $50 fine. Ponshock said the lounge gives “a home” to cannabis users, Ganjapreneur media reviewed.

“…It’s exciting for us to be able to spread the joy and love that cannabis has brought us,” he said.

Likewise, Brett Burke, co-owner of Sol, speaking to KVIA, expressed that he can “envision people, instead of stopping by the brewery for a beer after work, stopping by for a cannabis cocktail to relax before heading home.”

Recreational marijuana sales in the state of New Mexico began on April 1 of this year. In the first three days of the new market’s launch, sales totaled more than $3.52 million.
